Start with the website you actually run

A portfolio, booking site and online store have different requirements. Write down the software you use, the number of sites, expected visitors, storage and email accounts.

Include the person who maintains the website in the decision. You can compare plans more fairly when each provider is being asked to meet the same brief.

Compare the ongoing cost

Record the normal price as well as the introductory offer. Check the billing period, renewal cost, tax treatment and cancellation conditions. Domain registration, renewal, mailbox storage, control-panel licences and backups can affect the total.

A lower first payment is not always a lower annual cost. Ask for clarification whenever a price depends on a longer commitment.

Read the resource limits

Storage is only one part of a hosting package. Check website limits, database allowances and any CPU, memory, process or traffic restrictions.

Understand what happens when you reach a limit: does the site slow down, stop accepting requests or need an upgrade? “Unlimited” should be read alongside acceptable-use conditions and the actual limits of the platform.

Look at support scope, not just availability

Ask which channels are available and which problems the team will handle. Server support is different from editing a website or repairing a third-party plugin. Find out how urgent issues are escalated and how maintenance is announced.

If you rely on a developer, clarify how the provider and developer will work together when a problem crosses both areas.

Check backup and migration details

Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained, whether they are stored separately and whether restoration costs extra. For a move, confirm what is included: website files, databases, mailboxes, DNS records and testing.

Keep the old account active until the new environment is checked. A migration promise is more useful when its scope is written down.

Evaluate speed and reliability with context

Choose performance evidence that resembles your real website and audience. A single speed test depends on page design, cache state and network conditions. Review service-level terms, maintenance policies and recovery arrangements alongside performance claims.

No hosting company can resolve every slow page without attention to themes, images, plugins and application code.
