01

Choose a domain people can remember

Use a name that is easy to spell, say aloud and type on a phone. Avoid unnecessary punctuation and numbers if they make the address confusing. Consider how it will look on an invoice, email signature and business card. A shorter name can help, but clarity is more important than cutting a meaningful name down to initials nobody recognises.

02

Pick an extension for your audience

A .co.za domain is a familiar choice for a South African business. A .com can support a broad international identity, while .africa can suit a continental focus. Organisations may consider .org where it fits their purpose. Check the registration rules and renewal costs for the extension you choose. The extension is part of your identity, not a shortcut to a search ranking.

03

Check availability and complete registration

An availability search checks whether a name can be registered at that moment. It does not reserve the domain. Continue through the provider’s registration process, supply accurate registrant details and review the final price and period. Wait for the successful registration confirmation before treating the domain as yours. If a name is unavailable, explore a clear alternative rather than adding confusing characters.

04

Keep control of the registrant account

Use contact details that your business controls and can continue to access. If a designer registers a domain on your behalf, agree who the registrant is and how you will manage it later. Keep the account protected and make sure more than one trusted business contact knows how renewal is handled. Losing access to an old email address can complicate future changes.

05

Connect your website and email

Registration and hosting are separate services. DNS connects your domain to a website and routes email to the correct provider. A web-record change is not the same as changing mail records. If you already use business email, review the existing DNS configuration before moving the website so the change does not interrupt your mail.

06

Renew before the expiry date

A registered name needs renewal to remain under your control. Review renewal reminders, payment details and any auto-renew setting. Check the renewal price separately from a first-year offer. If a domain expires, recovery rules and costs vary by extension and stage of expiry; contact the provider promptly rather than assuming it can always be recovered at the normal price.

07

Transferring an existing domain

A transfer changes the provider managing the registration. It does not automatically move your website or email. Confirm transfer eligibility, any authorisation steps, timing and fees for your domain extension. Keep access to the current registrar and check DNS continuity before starting. The Coolhost team can help you identify which parts of your online setup need to move.

How much does a .co.za domain cost?

Register a .co.za domain from R100 per year. Confirm the current registration price, renewal price and final charges before placing an order.

Does domain registration include a website?

Not by itself. You also need website content and a hosting or website-builder service. Email hosting may be a separate part of the setup.

Can I register a domain without hosting?

Yes, domain registration and website hosting can be arranged separately. You can connect the domain to a hosting service when you are ready.

Will a keyword in my domain guarantee a ranking?

No. Choose a name that serves your brand and audience. Search visibility also depends on useful content, technical accessibility and other signals.

Keep your name
connected to your business.

A domain can outlast the website you launch with. Keep the registrant details accurate and make sure your business can access the account, renewal notices and DNS settings.

Before a transfer, record the current nameservers and service records. Moving the registration does not automatically move your website or email; plan each part so the address keeps working.
